Christian Vásquez Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela

Christian Vásquez, conductor and violinist, is one of the star musicians from El Sistema, and he studied conducting with José Antonio Abreu, the founder of El Sistema. He became Chief Conductor of the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, a prestigious Norwegian orchestra, at the beginning of the 2013/14 season, inaugurating the start of an initial four-year term. His contract was extended for two more years until 2019, after a successful relationship with the Orchestra.

 

He gained international reputation by conducting other major orchestras such as Gewandhausorchester Leizig, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, Prague Radio Symphony, and Helsinki Philharmonic. Vásquez has worked closely with such world-class musicians as Simon Rattle, Frank Peter Zimmermann, Truls Mørk, Edicson Ruiz, Martin Grubinger, Håkan Hardenberger, Reinhold Friedrich, Jonathan Biss, Kyrill Gerstein and Bertrand Chamayou.

 

His performance in Korea in 2019 became a hot topic when he conducted the Seoul Philharmonic on Richard Strauss’s Horn Concerto No. 2 with Stefan Dohr (principal hornist of the Berlin Philharmonic) and Schubert's Symphony No. 9 ‘The Great’. In 2021, Vásquez conducted the opening concert of the Tongyeong International Music Festival on Isang Yun's Fanfare & Memorial (1979) and Shostakovich Symphony No. 5, etc.
