독일의 언론인 엘레노어 뷔닝은 통영국제음악당을 ‘세계에서 가장 아름다운 공연장 중 하나’라고 표현했다. 2014년에 개관한 이 음악당은 1300석 규모의 슈박스 형태로 설계되었으며, 완벽한 음향을 자랑한다. 갈매기 형상으로 한 지붕 아래 지어진 통영국제음악당은 한국에서 찾아보기 힘든 클래식 전용 극장이다.

통영국제음악제와 윤이상의 음악과 유산의 상징적 터전에 대한 구상은 2006년에 처음으로 시작되었다. 대림건설에서 건축을 맡았으며 완공까지 7년의 시간이 소요되었다.

새로운 공연장의 개관은 통영시에 새로운 시대의 시작을 알렸다. 이탈리아 출신의 저명한 작곡가 살바토레 샤리노는 레지던스 아티스트로 2014 통영국제음악제를 찾았으며 통영국제음악당의 개관식에서 다음과 같이 말했다.

“새로운 세대를 형성한다는 것은 미래의 관객을 창출하는 것뿐만 아니라 한 나라의 음악의 전통을 위해서도 매우 중요한 일이다. 우리 모두는 성인으로서 전통이 무엇인지 잘 알고 있지만, 그 전통은 결코 하루 아침에 만들어지는 것이 아니다. 모든 전통에는 그 출발점이 있다. 나는 오늘이 바로 그날이라고 믿어 의심치 않는다”

Hailed by German journalist Eleonore Buening as “one of the most beautiful concert halls anywhere”, Tongyeong Concert Hall was opened in 2014. Designed in shoe-box style with perfect acoustics, the 1300-seat hall with its seagull-shaped roof is one of the few Korean venues dedicated solely to classical music.

The idea of a home for the Tongyeong International Music Festival and a symbolic home for the music and legacy of Isang Yun was first conceived in 2006 the actual building was constructed by Daelim Company and took 7 years to complete.

Opening the new concert hall marked the beginning of a new era for Tongyeong city. Salvatore Sciarrino, reknown Italian artist and composer in resi dence at the Tongyeong Inter national Music Festival 2014 wrote on the occasion of the concert hall’s opening

“Molding a new generation is not only important to create a new future audience, but for the tradition of music in this country,” Sciarrino said. “We, as adults, know what tradition is, but tradition just doesn’t appear one day. There’s starting point of tradition, and I believe that day is today.”
